Has anyone had SIBO following FMT? If so, how is it treated?

I did. I had a horrible case - actually one of the worst the doctor had ever seen. I took Xifaxan.

How were you tested and How did that effect you considering your FMT? I feel like an antibiotic would damage the new bacteria. Did you feel better after that treatment?

Hi .
You can end up with SiBO if you had a naso-gastric infusion or capsule FMT. If you suspect SIBO you should do the breath test that measures the hydrogen and methane produced by bacteria in the SI that has diffused into the blood, then lungs, for expiration.
SIBO is usually treated with Rifaximine or Metronidazole.

Georgina, is it possible to get SIBO from an FMT administered via colonoscopy?

It is , only if the slurry was delivered into ileocecal valve or if it was a malfunction of it. This valve is between the small and large intestines and is designed to prevent material in the large intestine from migrating back into the small intestine. When this valve is not shutting properly, intestinal bacteria migrate from the colon into the small intestine.
A doctor can give more info then me!

I took the Xifaxan after my FMT. I don't know if the FMT caused it, but it was most likely the NG transfer I had first. However, they did put the stool into the ileum, so that is possible. The Xifaxan helped and I did not relapse after it. I had horrible food intolerances and the Xifaxan cut them down considerably. It also helped the gas and other IBS type issues.

The lactulose breath test is what I had which measures the gases that Georgina mentioned. My results were sky high 150% - off the graph. I think anything above 20 is considered positive.

I understand that sometimes you can treat this with diet. My doctor gave me a diet sheet listing the things that were ok to eat, but I was eating those things already because others caused me problems.

If you are concerned, I would get a breath test. Some posters on the site thought they had SIBO, but when they tested, the test was negative.

Thank you both for the info! Perhaps it is just the flora settling but it seemed odd that the gas symptoms have gotten so much worse approaching the 9 week mark.
