Interesting approach

Postby sevla » Tue Jun 09, 2015 3:14 pm

Hi everyone,
Yesterday I went to a c-diff specialist who also does FMT. I am on dificid (after Flagyl and Vanco did not work) and am feeling better. However I want to have options in case of a new recurrance. He says that his success rate has been 100% for the past 5 years because he does the FMT through endoscopy and colonoscopy - did anyone have a simiar FMT procedure? I thought that the one done through colonoscopy alone is the most common.

It is. The endo procedure can cause SIBO . Doubt if anyone has 100 per cent sucevss rate.,usually it is 90 to 92 per cent. I would get another opinion.

Thanks, Bobbie. I will definitely get a second opinion. I also was surprised that he bragged about a supposed 100% success rate with his patients.

As a doc does more FMTs, the success rate goes down slighty.

I had it done that way in 2010 and it was not 100%. About 6 months later, after having an intestinal virus, I tested positive again, but did not treat except with Pepto Bismol, so in that respect it was successful. However, I do have SIBO and I am not sure if that was a contributing factor. The GI motility specialist seems to think so.

Theres an expert opinion on here somewhere that states that endoscope can be dangerous.
It suggests that if the patient vomits the donation might go into the lungs and cause a serious infection.

Thanks Beth22 and Roy! Now I really want a second opinion for sure! I was sooo excited that he agreed on going the FMT route in case Dificid does not work. However, knowing that his approach might be dangerous.. I no longer am as excited.. Thank you all again for sharing your knowledge and experiences. As many here said, all together, we seem to know more about this nasty bug than many doctors out there..

Wow - thanks so much, Roy! This makes me really nervous now. I was able to get an appointment with a second c-diff specialist this Saturday. I want a second opinion. The one I saw is the head of a GI Department at a regionally ranked hospital (and has been featured on some news and articles). I am really surprised he would suggest a procedure that has lower success rate and more risk of complications... I could ask him to just do it via colonoscopy, but these doctors have those big egos and I don't know how he would take my "suggestion". So it's better if I see another specialist.
