Phew that title barely fit.
I wanted to let everyone know it's over 6 months with no relapses. I purchased several bottles of lactobacillus sporogenes and bifidobacterium infantis.
Lactobacillus sporogenes, is a good spore forming bacteria which readily colonizes the intestine. Bifidobacterium infantis is present in infants but is sometimes killed off in adults due to antibiotics.
I took a pill of bifidobacterium infantis, and lactobacillus sporogenes and placed each one in a separate pint of milk before I went to bed, and when I woke up in the morning I drank the milk cultures.
I did this until I used up my supply of bacteria.
It has been over 6 months with no other treatments. I am considering this cured.
I have been extremely frustrated with doctors, it seems they really are not well educated on this topic. Round after round of antibiotics can't fix the problem because the problem is a lack of good bacteria to start with. Not to mention C. diff is a spore forming bacteria and the spores live for years . It's not practical to take hard core antibiotics for several years.
I hope this information helps someone else, it has helped me tremendously.

Where do you get the lactobacillus sporogenes? I have heard of the infantis, but not the other.

Hi beth,
I got mine off amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/Thorne-Research-L ... 000FGXO0W/
It is also known as bacillus coagulans http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacillus_coagulans
It is a beneficial bacteria that forms spores which survive being dehydrated unlike most other probiotics.
I remember first reading about L. sporogenes on mercola.com and it really has been a godsend.

I wanted to note that the milk cultures I made actually set out and were not refrigerated. I made sure the caps were tightly closed before I went to bed. The milk was not sour or thick it tasted almost normal.

Re: Cured by bifidobacterium infantis & lactobacillus sporog
You mention you are lactose intolerant, I think they make lactose free milk now they add large amounts of lactase which breaks down the lactose, or somehow filter it out. If you really can't stand cows milk, you might be able to try soymilk/almond/rice milk I am not sure if the bacteria will colonize those as well but I don't think it would hurt to try.
Most pro-biotics don't actually work because the bacteria die when dehydrated, and if any survive the dosage is thousands of times too low to actually do anything. Lactobacillus sporogenes I know survives in a spore form even if dehydrated, I am not so sure about bifidobacterium infantis. Taking most pro-biotics is more akin to homeopathy where the usable ingredient is so diluted it could never offer any real effect other than placebo. Making a fermented milk using bacteria gives thousands of times the dosage of taking a pill of dried mostly dead bacteria. Before I found out about lactobacillus sporogenes/ bifidobacterium infantis I would eat a large bowl of yogurt each day to control the symptoms, but anything less would have no effect.
I suffered with what I was told was IBS for several years. I was referred from specialist to specialist and spent thousands of dollars out of pocket. Lots of unnecessary procedures, medicines, and "take two pills and call me in the morning" talks.
I have bounced around the system to the point where I feel most doctors are totally incompetent to do their job, have no clue, and don't really care as long as they are getting paid to not care. Things got so bad it was really a debilitating problem.
In frustration of doctors incompetency I decided to research my symptoms. They weren't helping so I felt it was my responsibility to cure myself. From what I read it sounded like a massive C. Diff infection, which would make sense as I had a round of antibiotics before this whole ordeal started. I found a new doctor walked in and asked for a c.diff toxin test which the doctor didn't want to authorize as I couldn't possibly have c. diff that was something old people got. I finally got the lab results back which indicated the presence of c diff toxin and when through several rounds of flagl (sp) and vanco with no effect other than making me sicker than I already was. Antibiotics had absolutely no effect other than making my wallet lighter. It seems C. Diff produces spores which survive for years when attacked with antibiotics. How do you kill something like that short of taking vanco for 2-3 years every day?
I found that yogurt offered a quick fix for me, I ate a large bowl of yogurt every single day, and made my own to save money, using small amounts of yogurt, into 1/2 gallon of milk which I would leave out for at least 8 hours. This fixed the problem as long as I consumed large amounts of yogurt each day, but it wasn't a permanent solution.
I read about lactobacillus sporogenes and bifidobacterium infantis and decided to try them. I figured that I could make a yogurt with the to culture the bacteria and increase the dose in doing so.
As far as I can tell no relapses at this point and it's been over 6 months of doing things normally without worrying about it.

Mike,
Wonderful news and very interesting information. Just to clarify, for years you had these symptoms and they diagnosed you with IBS come to find out it was cdiff. You must have been very ill having that long without treatment. So glad you are recovered.

I believe it was about 3 years I suffered with C. Diff misdiagnosed as IBS.

Hmm....Align contains bifidobacteria....
I wonder if Align works as good.

I tried Align - on my GI's recomendation for IBS. Didn't hurt or help -- and is expensive, but then most probiotics are. Everyone is different, however.

Re: Cured by bifidobacterium infantis & lactobacillus sporog
It's my theory that probably the L. Sporogenes had the most effect.
C. Diff is a spore forming bacteria so it makes sense to me to fight a bad spore forming bacteria with a good spore forming bacteria.
Also I think you can't really get enough bacteria from taking a pill to really have an effect. I think when you use them as a culture starter for a yogurt you get thousands if not millions of times more live bacteria into your system.

Hi Mike,
Did you open the capsules and sprinkle them in the milk before going to bed?
Thanks,
debdee

Yes, I pulled apart the capsules and poured the powder into the milk. Then I recapped the milk and shook it for 30 seconds or so and went to bed. I continued doing so till I was out of pills.

Thank you, Mike. Since I can't handle dairy right now, I may try it in rice milk. I'm so glad you're cured! Thanks for posting what worked for you! I bought the lactobacillus sporogenes and also take many other probiotics, so I'm sure it all adds up!
