C-diff free since Sept 12, 2017. Symptom and IBS free, no dietary restrictions.

Postby Machaon » Sun Mar 11, 2018 3:01 pm

My ordeal with C-diff started approximately April 19, 2017, the day after I returned from a routine Coumadin test at a hospital. I felt a little off and had diarrhea. After three weeks of worsening health, on May 8th, I went back to the hospital for outpatient treatment and was given Ciprofloxacin 500 mg and Flagyl 500 mg. The next day I was diagnosed with C-diff, told to immediately stop taking Ciprofloxacin!

Anyways... the awful, torturous Flagyl didn't work. I had to force any kind of food down! Then, 14 days of Vanco didn't work. Then 14 days of Vanco followed by several weeks of tapering/pulsing didn't work. My legs were painfully swollen, the muscles were disfigured and I was nauseated, very weak and fatigued and really thought that I was not going to survive.

Finally September 12th, after 10 days of Dificid, it was my first day without treatment and without C-diff. I could eat anything I wanted with few side effects, but I was very weak. It took several weeks for the leg swelling and dis-figuration to subside and about four months before I could lift my legs up or climb stairs without a struggle. I could finally stop wearing an embarrassing adult diaper!

I never thought that I would fully recover, or if my life could go back to normal and with a good quality of life. I feel good and am doing significant physical exercise, and eating 5 eggs and three salads each day.

I wish, for those who are presently struggling with this awful, debilitating infection, a full and timely recovery; and to never suffer from C-diff again.

Prior to finding this site I felt very alone, scared and confused. I want to, once again, thank the contributors and management of this site for the wonderful support and help for those of us who have had the misfortune to suffer from C-diff. What wonderful people!

Re: Now ONE YEAR after 10 days of Dificid, symptom and IBS free, no dietary restrictions.

Well... I am now one year free of C-diff and having no digestion or intestinal problems. Consider myself very lucky to not have had any after effects of that nasty, debilitating, horrible intestinal infection!

Some good things that resulted from my C-diff: I found this internet site that was/is very helpful and compassionate and informative PLUS I learned a lot about the bacteria in one's gut and that one should be very wise and selective in the use of antibiotics. Take antibiotics only when there's no other choice.

So happy to hear you are doing well, Bob. I remember last year you were still dealing with treatment when the hurricane hit Florida. That's fantastic that you can eat whatever you like with no issues. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for your nice post, beth22! I hope that you are doing very well!

Getting thru another hurricane season down here in South Florida and tomorrow I will be 15 months post-Dificid and post C-diff infection. Last year I thought that it would NEVER go away!

I can still eat everything that I want, as long as I follow the limitations of an Insulin Resistance diet.

My daily diet?

My current daily diet that I eat each and every day, day after day, week after week, month after month:

5:30 am & 8:00am: Microwaved one scrambled egg seasoned with cinnamon and turmeric; and ½ cup high fiber, low sugar Cereal with water, one tablespoon low sugar yogurt.

10:30am & 1pm & 3:30pm: large salad romaine, mushrooms, carrot, tomato, broccoli with one tablespoon of home made honey mustard salad dressing, low carb snack bar, one tablespoon low sugar yogurt.

6:00 pm: large salad romaine, mushrooms, carrot, tomato, broccoli with one tablespoon of home made honey mustard salad dressing, two slices of cheddar cheese.

So... a double success story, one of success against C-diff and one of success against Insulin Resistance/Diabetes II

Almost three years after the end of the awful C-diff nightmare! I was extremely lucky because infections can cause lasting damage and I suffered from no lasting anything. It's all but a distant memory, except that I try to avoid antibiotics. Today I decided to revisit this wonderful, caring, helpful support group; which was of great help to me during my C-diff battle.

The current battle, for all of us, is to also avoid getting a Covid-19 infection.

Good to hear from you, Bob. I was thinking of you the other day reading about all the COVID-19 cases in Florida. Of course, here in CA we are not much better. Glad you are still doing well. Stay safe!

It's now about five years C-diff free. I just had a dental infection. The dentist said that he doesn't prescribe clindamycin because of the link to C-diff. Clindamycin was responsible for my C-diff infection.

I've just finished a course of cephalexin. So far, so good. No sign of C-diff!

In the past few years I've had several dental infections, in which I've had to take either amoxicillin or cephalexin, all without a reoccurrence.

It scares the hell out of me every time I have to take antibiotics.

Thanks, Beth! I hope that you are doing well! :)

My last cephalexin was Friday morning. I'll be a little anxious over the next week, hoping against a repeat of C-diff.

Are you taking any probiotics, kefir or eating yogurt?

Yes, I am taking probiotics and also saccharomyces boulardii. I am not really having any significant problems right now, but when I originally had my C-diff infection there was quite a delay between when I took clindamycin and then was hit with C-diff. The fear of a return never ends!

Yes, the same thing happened to me. I think it was 4 - 6 weeks later. I would continue to take the things you are taking for about a month if they agree with you. My mother took antibiotics several times after her bouts with c difficile and she did not relapse. She took a daily probiotic. I hope the same is true for you.
