It's now been 5 months

We spend a lot of time talking about the bad news in this discussion group - here's the spot for the good news. If you've had c-diff and are now well, please tell us about it here.

It's now been 5 months

Postby Troubledbythis » Wed Aug 14, 2013 7:25 pm

Hi all...

Several months ago I reported being diagnosed with C-Diff after a 7 day treatment of Clindamycin. I lived with the problem for a week before going to the doctor. My doctor was all over the possibility of C-Diff and immediately ordered a test. Once we knew I had it she prescribed a 14 day blast of Metronidazole. She told me if all was well after 10 days I could stop. Things were better at 10 days and I stopped only to realize it was a mistake after one day. I got back on the drug and it was followed up by another 10 day prescription of it. I carefully used the drug and carried out the medication until it was gone. My wife and I also performed a fecal enema once a few days before the second prescription ran out.

Once off the drug I still wasn't sure if I had successfully kicked the beast out of me. Things still weren't normal in the bathroom world but were far better than before the treatment began. Day by day things continued to improve. When I last reported success it had been about two weeks and things were stable and holding as experienced while on Metronidazole. It was suggested I give it a few months and get back to you with my progress. Well, it's now been five months and I'm getting closer to "normal" every day. It's taken a long time for my stools to completely return to Pre-C-Diff behavior, but day by day it's improved and after 5 months I'm thinking I kicked the problem.

I will always be ever-alert of the symptoms and will never forget the problem I encountered. I should also mention I sent an email to the Specialist that prescribed the Clindamycin. I thought that would be where the story ended but he actually called me one night and we spoke of my experience at length. He agree to provide an informational sheet with the prescriptions he writes suggesting the need for his patients to carefully review the side effects of these antibiotics with the pharmacist and to consider diet and the use of Pro-biotics while taking the drugs.

Thanks for everyone's time to answer my posts as well as all of the other stories and information on this site. I used it a lot and found it extremely helpful.

Thanks for posting on your progress. It gives hope to others who are still struggling. I think it is great that you spoke to the doctor who prescribed the clindamycin for you and it sounds as if he is doing something to warn his patients. At least something positive came out of your experience. Too bad other doctors don't listen as well. Thank you for being so proactive and helping others by doing so. Best of luck to you.

I agree with Beth. Kudos to you for contacting the doctor. Clindamycin was the first antibiotic implicated in C. diff.

Thanks for posting on the site to give encouragement to others. Glad the site was helpful.

JRC4,
I didn't have exactly what you describe with the stomach, but I did have pain and soreness in my left lower abdomen- If you will post your questions under Questions about c diff, more people will see it and respond. Hope you feel better soon- This is not a fun illness to have.
