Inflamation Down There

Since c-diff is a disease of the "lower half", so to speak, we find that many of our members cannot refrain from discussing what comes out the bottom end. If you must do it, please do it here.

Inflamation Down There

Postby FrankS » Mon Jan 01, 2018 5:48 pm

I had a FMT six weeks ago. In addition to bad smelling gas, I have a lot of inflammation and burning down in the rectum. It is very difficult to sit for any length of time and lay down. The nurse said it was probably hemorrhoids but I think I'm having a reaction to donor stool. It start about two weeks after them FMT. I've been doing sith baths and ointments with no relief. Can anyone help? I about to be at the end of my rope.

Thanks.

I would go and see a colon and rectal specialist (formerly known as proctologist). The doctor can take a look in there and see if it is hemorrhoids or something else. If it is inflammation, there are ointments and creams for that and hopefully you can get a prescription.

Thanks Beth, I forgot to mention I did see an colon\rectal specialist and he did an anoscope. He didn't see anything like a fissure or abscess but said the hemorrhoids were probably to blame. But this gets worse everday and burns 24x7, not what I have experienced with hemorrhoids.

I had some inflammation there with the c-diff but it subsided after I got on antibiotics. It went away for two weeks after the FMT, but has come back. I'm afraid I am reacting to something in the donor stool, which is not a good situation at all.

Sounds typical for hems and your Dr confirmed you have them.
I have never heard of that type of reaction to FMT.
That area is very tough, any reaction would be internal and involve the mucous membranes, not at the exit!

Thanks Roy. I searched and didn't find rectal inflammation as a side effect from FMT. Hopefully I'm not the first. I am having constipation and foul gas so maybe that has amplified the pain and irritation.

Constipation definitely aggravates hemorrhoids, can cause mucus and burning. I have had that myself. Did the doctor give you any cream or ointment to use? If not, call and see what he would suggest.

He just suggested an OTC ointment. I'm using Dr. Buttler's ointment. Maybe I should ask for a prescription strength since ointment.

My situation has worsened. I have pain around the hip area - hurts to the touch. It hurts the tailbone to lie down and try to sleep. It is not a simple case of hemorrhoids acting up. This really has me worried. Anyone have any ideas?

FrankS, with your symptoms speading, I wonder if your hemorrhoids could be infected? Did your doctor mention that possibility?

Hi FrankS, my reply to you is relevant to your comments before your last post, but still might be meaningful in some way. (Based on your last post you should report this this your doctor.. I have no ideas).
I am about 10 months post FMT. I have PI-IBS ( I guess) with alternating D and C and varying on and off food intolerances. Ever since my FMT I have episodes of burning foul smelling painful gas. The first couple months I had this, I was glad because it let me know I might have bacteria keeping the c Diff in check.
But it has never gotten better. It comes and goes. And I am positive it is due to certain foods I am eating, I’m just not sure which specific ones. I am getting ready to start a year long Digestive Wellness program in a few weeks to try to improve.
The point is I have A Lot of pain when I get this gas and extreme rectal burning. The gas will wake me up it is so painful. ... I have read about Methane SIBO recently wondering if I may have that or just some other type of Dysbiosis. So even though my c Diff is under control, I have other bacteria I didn’t have before the FMT that are causing me these symptoms. These bacteria are fermenting the carbohydrates you eat and creating this awful gas. I also read methane SIBO causes constipation, not D. No matter what is wrong with you, the gas must be an aggravant. So eat a low fodmap diet and see if you can at least decrease that aspect of your problem.

Machaon - no the doc didn't mention anything about infection. He didn't see any.

MKW - That's good information. I'm kinda regretting doing the FMT now, though I went through many rounds of antibiotics prior. Keeping from being constipated by using a fiber supplement or mirilax also helps the gas, since the matter doesn't sit and ferment.

Roy, to clarify, these are internal hemorrhoids that I have per colonoscopy. The last 3 inches of so of the rectum until the exit is reached is where the pain is. Do you still think it is hems? It hurts just below and to the right of my tailbone when I lay down to (try) to sleep.

My mom used to get a lot of pain with her hemorrhoids. I would definitely tell your doctor or schedule a return visit. I had SIBO, but not the one from methane. However, we did have a woman here who had that and her symptoms were painful gas and the types of pain that you describe. I see a SIBO specialist - GI motility specialist. If there is one in your area, it might be worth seeing him or her. They deal with dysbiosis, IBS, SIBO, etc.

If a hemorrhoid gets thrombosed you end up I a lot of pain . You really need to go and get that checked by a colorectal specialist.

Ditto to seeing a specialist. My son had absessed hemmeroids years ago and was miserable. We talked him into seeing a specialist who did surgery. He moved home for awhile. We called him "Mr, Gumpy" - but not in front of him. We were concerned because he had c diff twice as a child. The surgeon recommended our son add more fibento his diet. we presented him with a large container of Metamucil. And he never had another problem. We wish the same for you.

Good luck.
