Yes!
The year my Mom died there were 12,000 deaths from c.diff in the UK. (2007)
Regulars will know I was involved in raising awareness and along with others on the (now closed) UK c.diff site we did a good job and got a LOT of publicity and forced the NHS to improve.
UK deaths are now 2000 a year.
I have a suspicion that not all figures are accurate and theres quite a few that are not recorded though.
Cleaning our hospitals helped in the short term but the big reduction came when the strict antibiotic stewardship guides were implemented.
US still needs to do that.
Antibiotics are lifesavers but too many Drs and even more dentists still hand them out like candy without the proof that they are needed.

U.S. hospitals are starting to implement antibiotic-stewardship programs, though at a disappointingly low rate. This article includes a map illustrating just how far implementation is lagging:

The U.S. is a backward country in so many ways.
If your illness was preceded by use of a medication, e.g., an antibiotic, please fill out an FDA Adverse Event Report at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/default.htm

What can we do to improve this? Have been trying for many years and don't see much progress.

Each year there's a conference on C. diff -- this year it's in November in St. Louis:

Researchers, CDC --- this year, Dr. McDonald -- and I think sometimes a few patients who have had C. diff attend and speak. Maybe too late to go this year (?) but perhaps next time some of us could attend as a group and participate.
