your worst symptoms

Postby gflex » Mon Apr 27, 2020 6:32 am

Hello,
I'm a nurse and I have practice working with patients who have C-diff. Mainly in the ICU unit because C-Diff is a hospital infection.

Could you tell me your worst simptoms regarding this illness? I'm working on nursing plan.

Chronic D 20 times a day is the most obvious answer. But for me the cramping and nausea was overwhelming. I was on day 3 recovering from hemi-colectomy surgery and still in the hospital when I came down with C Diff. I have a high pain threshold and have not used pain meds for any of my surgeries, but did when C Diff hit. The nursing staff alternated it with anti-nausea medicine, which was fairly effective. I was so nauseous I had difficulty drinking water and someone got the bright idea to remove my IV fluids despite my protests. I became severely dehydrated which affected my kidneys and increased the nausea. I believe it extended my hospital stay two days for a total of five extra days due to C Diff.

I had two relapses in my recovery, and was plagued with both cramping and nausea throughout, fortunately not to the extent in the hospital.

Someone asked me what having C Diff was like. The only thing I could liken it to was having a bad case of food poisoning that went on for months.

They did not give me any probiotics in the hospital. I was in the same hospital a month before for an emergency appendectomy and they gave me kefir and probiotics while on antibioitics. My surgeon had me stop them 10 days before the second surgery.

To be honest, I was so nauseous the first few weeks i couldn't tolerate them. I drank a little kefir and ate a little yogurt as tolerated. I added probiotics as soon as I could tolerate, but discovered taking too much increased nausea, so backed off. I am still taking them, but not daily.

I've heard Vanco can add to the nausea, but I still had it after my taper.

As a nurse you will find a great information on this site about difficult symptoms that can occur far beyond patient treatment.

I would also advise consulting with your local Infectious Disease specialist.

What is often missed in the hospital is how patients are AFTER they go home and how difficult this illness can be. Recovery can often take time and the concern for reoccurance lingers with most patients.

Unfortunately CDIFF can be picked up in the community and by those who have NOT been on antibiotics. Those of us who work in a hospital setting are a far more risk.

I was having watery D every 1-3 minutes. It made me so dehydrated that it caused me to go into premature labor. Horrible cramping, fatigue, and anxiety. I ended up with an anal fissure afterwards that took months to heal.

What medication your doctor prescribes to you to rehydrate yourself?

For me the worst was going to the bathroom 20+ times a day, with violent, painful cramping and incessant urges to go. I couldn't sleep, it kept me up through the night. It was also full of blood, mucus, and pus, and I couldn't keep any food in me for more than a couple hours. I was dehydrated, exhausted, and very anxious.
