New member needs advice

Postby Rudi » Tue Feb 18, 2020 10:04 pm

I just joined this group and has been incredibly helpful. Thank you.
I am a 52 y/o Female
My test results tested positive for C diff3-4 weeks ago...(after years of putting off blood work and stool samples)
When my GI Dr called me late on a weekend evening, iwas a bit stunned because I have had the same symptoms for 2 -3 years and have not been on any antibiotics previously.
I have finished my rounds of Valco have seen little or no improvements. I thought having IBS for years it was normal to have 20 BMs a a day and vomiting 2-3 x a week..?
I am going for another round of testing this week..assuming to prescribe a different medication like flagyl? any other recommendations or thoughts?
Thanks for your time .

Hi Rudi and welcome to the site. Please read the first forum that has information for new posters.

Flagyl is no longer recommended as a treatment for c difficile, especially if you have already taken vanco. There is a medication called Dificid that targets c difficile and spares more good flora. You should talk to your doctor about that.

Have you had other tests like a colonoscopy to rule out other conditions? Vomiting is not a typical symptoms of c difficile, but it can happen. It is possible that you may have tested positive, but have something else on top. You said you have had IBS for years. Were you ever tested for gluten intolerance or fructose intolerance? What about SIBO? If your symptoms are not any better at all with the vanco, it may not be the c difficile that is causing the problems. I would talk this over with your GI. But, as I said, Flagyl is no longer recommended according to guidelines to treat c difficile.

As Beth said , if Vanco didn't give u any relief of symptoms you might consider that maybe something else is going on and Cdiff might have been discovered accidentally . It might be a good ideea to ask your doctor to test you for everything Beth suggested, and maybe a calprotectin test to check if there is a inflammatory bowel disease and a complete panel for food allergies .
After my FMT in summer 2018 , i continued to have severe IBS symptoms :pain (the most severe pain was around period) , D , mucus, couldn't digest most foods ,nausea , etc , tested for CDiff and it was negative , but did go to more specialist to sort things out and finally i had discovered that i had bowel endometriosis . After the surgery for endo , for the first time in five years i had normal BM. OF course , i still get occasional IBS depending on what i eat , but it's a really mild compared to what i had before.
