Are outpatient surgery centers safer regarding CDiff?
My husband is having surgery for an anal fistula tomorrow morning in an outpatient surgery center. Does anyone have any idea if these places are as unsanitary as hospitals, especially in regards to C Diff?

Outpatient surgery centers probably see fewer C diff issues because the surgeries done there can be rescheduled if the patient is sick. Your husband is not going to enjoy his long ride home. Ask the surgeon to use Exparel local anesthetic post-op. It lasts 3 days and keeps people from needing narcotic pain meds a lot of times.

I think outpatient surgery centers would be a lot safer. I know when I had my FMT's done, they scheduled them the last procedure of the day because they do a terminal clean afterwards. Also, they would usually know in advance what ailments a patient has. In the hospitals, they may not know what a patient has until a few days later and could have possible already spread. Good luck I hope his procedure goes smoothly!

I think Outpatient surgery centers can be alot safer. From my experience, the two I worked it did not have issues.
The hospital, is an entirely different situation. I see it everyday

Hospitals handle every thing - Pneumonia and other resp problems, hospital acquired infections, etc. Outpatient surgery centers are almost always safer.

Thanks everyone! We are getting ready to go. Hopefully it won't take too long but it'll be a long morning I'm sure. Amy, thanks for the info about the anesthetic! I'll have him ask about it.

We are home. Everything went ok. He said they didn't use that anesthetic but he did give him one that would last all day today. He also prescribed Toradol and Percocet in case the Toradol wasn't enough. The bad thing is he had to take Flagyl every eight hours for five days. Ugh!

Perhaps now, he will understand a small amount about what you have been through. While he is still not feeling well, I would mention how difficult it has been for you to move while ill.
