PI IBS duration and symptoms

Postby hppyppy » Tue Jul 12, 2016 6:03 pm

I have been officially c-diff free for a little over 4 months now after having FMT by oral capsules, however I often still struggle with what I think is PI IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, rumbling, nausea, and bloating. However I rarely if ever have diarrhea, my stools are always firm and solid, sometimes a little loose but I have been going once a day which I am incredibly grateful for. However the IBS symptoms can be quite bothersome and really affect my quality of life; some days I don't feel like leaving the bed, taking vacations and eating out at restaurants give me anxiety, and I feel more tired than I was before this whole ordeal began.

For those of you who have recovered from c-diff and battled PI IBS symptoms, were the symptoms similar to mine and how long has it lasted until you saw improvement?? Thanks!

It sounds like you are doing great, and going once per day isn't even what I would call PI IBS. Occasional gas and bloating are pretty normal for pretty much everybody. What was your source for the capsules? Your results are amazing, and it would be a huge help to others to know more details about your treatment.

Wow thank you! It's nice to hear another person's perspective at this point. I do consider myself extremely lucky, however a lot of things I used to be able to eat before c diff I still can't now, which includes alcohol and fatty foods. My capsules were given to me with the help of an infectious disease specialist, where my mom was the donor and I had to take about 25. It was unpleasant to say the least, but it clearly gave me enough of the good stuff so that I could begin the healing process. Looking back, I had tried antibiotics for way too long for them to be beneficial, because right up until my FMT I was completely deprived of all bacteria good and bad and my body didn't know what to make of it. I just hope I'm still improving, because I definitely don't feel the way I did before all of this started yet.

In your original post you did not mention how long you were under treatment for CDIFF prior to taking the FMT pills.
Most GI's or ID's go 3 rounds of failure before moving to FMT. The gut takes time to heal, if you were on Flagyl,Vanco, or Dificid all would take time to heal.
Most have Post IBS issues even after FMT and it takes time. If you have gone 4 months without a relapse, that is fantastic!
Sometimes we have to see it as a "new normal" as the gut recovers. There are medications for Post IBS you may want to take with your GI about

hppyppy: After 3-1/2 years, I still have IBS issues and I never relapsed. Dairy, spicy food, raw vegetables (especially leafy), most sweets, and unfortunately probiotics are an anathema to my gut. It usually presents as bad cramping with occasional D. I try to avoid the triggers, but occasionally I'll try to reintroduce them and nearly always experience the same results. I've finally come to the realization that my intestines just don't like certain things and make sure I know it. I do experience a bit of envy watching my husband consume a taco or a cheese laden pizza, but knowing I'll be pretty miserable after I indulge my cravings keeps me from doing it. However, many people can eventually get back to their normal diets after C. Diff. I hope you will be one of them. You are still in the early stages of recovery.
Aloha and good luck,
Anne

Try to look on the bright side- you are eating healthier than most people you know! Fatty foods can cause gallbladder issues and a whole host of other issues. I know it would be nice to indulge in them once in a while though! Can you try taking pepto? I don't tolerate dairy well, I never really have. When I know I'm going to have dairy I take a pepto or some mylicon for the gas. I also think we forget how serious cdiff is, and we can't see the damage it has done to our gut lining. Just like a major surgery or having a baby, it takes a long time to get back to our normal state. Maybe your body just needs some more time to fully heal.
