9 months out, was doing great - and then bad luck :(

Postby Rev1119 » Sun Jul 12, 2020 9:56 am

Hope everyone is well and staying safe! So I'm 9 months post-vanco. For the first time since early fall I've been back to my normal weight, had more energy and am eating most everything I was before (less meat, but I can certainly deal with that).

Things were going swimmingly until last month when I had a freak accident and stepped (hard!) on a small white splinter (3/4 size of a grain of rice, likely wood or paint) in my bedroom. I got it out but the ball of my foot was in pain days later, so went to a podiatrist who did an x-ray, saw nothing, then lanced it to remove germs and told me to soak it and see if it improved. It improved for 2 weeks, but then I had worse pain radiating to my big toe. I had an MRI done which showed no infection or foreign body per MRI tech and podiatrist, but single joint arthritis, a joint tear and other fun stuff.

After reading online (I know, I know - Dr. Google is never best to consult), all signs point to synovitis which often does require antibiotics if a culture reveals bacteria. I am terrified, as I may have gotten C. Diff from cephalexin and ALL antibiotics make me violently sick to my stomach anyway. Still in pain - going to foot & ankle doc this week and really hoping for some kind of miracle (or that the doctor can do injectable antibiotics instead if need be, if those even exist?) Please send good vibes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait and see. I have had foot pain for 3 months before just from stepping incorrectly. Maybe a different kind of shot would help like cortisone or something else. Wait to see what the specialist tells you.

Thank you beth22 for your reassurance! I went to the best orthopedist in my area this morning, and the doctor said that the weeks of pain were not at all due to infection but rather how I stepped on the splinter/how the splinter went in (vertically). She said with confidence that it should just take another week or so to heal (I was SO relieved!). So your theory about it being related to how I stepped was right on target :) Thank you again!
