laneyw,
You need to ask a doctor these questions as this is a support site and not a medical site. Were you originally diagnosed with C. diff. ? Is that why you were on Flagyl? C. diff. is a tricky disease, and you can test negative and still have it especially if you haven't been off Flagyl or Vanco. for two weeks.
Read Dr. Borody's article and FAQ- Diagnosis & FAQ-Tests. If your symptoms fit these criteria, you could have C. diff. I hope you are seeing a GI (a specialist in GI diseases). If not, see one ASAP.

laneyw,
Glad you are seeing a GI. One hint: call and see if they have wait list. Then call every day and ask, "Any cancellations?" Sometimes they will work you in to stop your calls. Many specialists allot you 15 to 20 min. so have your questions organized plus take any med. records he/she might need. (See FAQ-Doctors' Visits.)
Don't apologize for venting. C. diff. is a frustrating disease. You said it, "In many ways you need to become your own doctor."
A doctor gives an educated, experienced, expensive guess. Sometimes they are right; sometimes wrong. Contrary to what some docs. think (altho. there are many good caring ones), they are human, and humans err. If you think something is wrong, it probably is.

Did they diagnosed you with c diff first and then given flagyl?
If you were still taking flagyl at the time you got tested again, it will most likely test negative even if you still have it. Make sure you wait at least 2 weeks after you are done with flagyl for a true result, like bobbie said. A lot of the times you can tell it's c diff because of the awful smell. Not sure if you get that same smell with e coli or salmonella.

Hi,
This is a really fustrating disease. I know because so many times I thought I was cured and had several false negative tests only to find out I was positive again. You can have several false negative tests in a row and then bam you test positive again. Also you can develope colitis. (inflamation of the colon) which can cause pain and swelling. Or you can really be clear now and it is just going to take some time for your colon to get back to normal. As far as work, if you practice good hygeine and wash your hands with soap and water every time you use the restroom, you shouldnt spread it. But I am also like you and terrified to spread it. After all, I practice good hygeine and I got it.
